Ron WhitmoreGraffiti can be more than destruction of property by vandals. Graffiti has been an art form of expression for many years on walls, trains, underpasses and buildings. Graffiti can also be dangerous. About a year ago, a young man was electrocuted while spray-painting an electrical box in Santa Fe and another young man fell off a roof and broke both his legs while spray painting a building. Santa Fe’s graffiti task force is also very busy arresting and prosecuting anyone they can catch defacing private and public property.

Artisan has taken a stand to get graffiti artists off the walls and on to board or canvas as a substrate to express their art. We are sponsoring, on September 27th from 1pm to 4pm at our Santa Fe store, a graffiti demonstration using Plutonium G professional spray paint on masonite panels. Our goal is to reach out to these young artists and show them a more productive way to express themselves. Many graffiti artists have “grown up” into commercial careers or fine artists and the younger ones need to know they have options available. Our intent is to reach out to as many graffiti artists in our community and get them off the walls where they are not wanted and onto the walls of galleries or private collectors.

Namaste,

Ron

He is extremely proud that the Oil Painters of America have selected his painting for their national juried shows for three years running [2004-2006]. Tom was also selected to be in the National Show in 2008 where he was awarded an Award of Excellence for his painting 'Flight’. Remember those joyous times in life when it was all fun and discovery? Adventures in the woods, looking under rocks. My first painting experiences where similar. The idea of putting my hands into paint and causing my right brain to laugh out loud!

Why does an artist need to approach his or her work with anxiety? Some even experience dread over the stress involved. This is why I choose a different way to paint. When working from photos I turn them upside down and do the painting that way! Kind of like hanging from monkey bars when we were kids. The truth is painting upside down takes the logic out and puts your right brain to work. I look at color, value and edges in a very straight forward way and the distraction of the subject is eliminated. I constantly check the painting in a mirror to check for anything that is not correct.

I construct the painting like a quilt placing patches of color side by side. Close to the finish I molest the edges using my brush, fingers or anything else. During this process you can see magic happen. It is absolutely thrilling. The next part is when I flip the painting right side up to see what I created. It’s like looking under those rocks as a kid.

"Truly a shopping mall for the artist with an unlimited variety and 5 star customer service. I have never experienced a store like that anywhere. A visit or a phone call and I can have anything I need. Thumbs up to Artisan!"

>>Artist's Material Expo 2009 "Creative Expression" -Sept. 17, 18, 19, 20

Artisan has now confirmed a date for our Artist's Material Expo at the new downtown Santa Fe Convention Center. The Expo will be September 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th, 2009. The new Santa Fe Convention Center will handle about 100 booths of art materials and we should be able to run over 120 workshops from the finest local and national artists. Please mark this down on your calendar and we will be providing more detailed information as the Expo grows nearer.

The city of Santa Fe is constructing a civic center on the site of the old Sweeney Center, which was torn down and recycled for the new building.

The 72,000-square-foot facility is expected to achieve silver certification under the standards of LEED, Leadership in Energy and
Environment Design. While the building may not reach gold or platinum status under LEED guidelines, the design and construction of the civic center is part of a larger push by the City Different to participate in the Architecture 2030 Challenge, which aims to reverse greenhouse gas emissions created during construction and use of buildings.
