What do artists Bill Worrell, Terry Allen, Kate Jewel, Sean Helen, Dan Valdez, Vic Lee, Charles Azbell, Paul Shapiro and Fred Spencer all have in common? Besides being accomplished visual artists, all these individuals are accomplished musicians. Many artists listen or meditate to music when they paint and some artists finish a painting and pick up a guitar or start composing on a piano. I really believe that when the creative channel is flowing, whether it is watercolor or jazz, sculpture or country western music, batik or Beethoven, creative energy is manifesting itself.

Being a songwriter with no venue to showcase your songs is a lot like being an artist with all your paintings hidden in the closet. Artisan's Santa Fe store will begin offering a venue for songwriters. Beginning March 7th, "Song Writer Sundays" will be held on the first Sunday of every month from 1pm to 3pm. A keyboard, guitar, microphone and amp will be set up and songwriters are invited to come perform solos, limited to three of their original songs. Come share some of your music or just come to listen.

On a similar note, Candyman on St. Michaels in Santa Fe has now remodeled and is offering classes in February on vocal techniques, mother and daughter singing, and techniques of songwriting. If you are interested in the Candyman program, please contact Lisa Carman at 505.466.2666.

When art is shared or expanded, the world is enriched.

Namaste,

Ron

Patricia Morrison

Patricia Morrison

My name is Patricia Morrison. I am an illustrator, teacher and craftswoman living, working and creating in Northern New Mexico. The vast natural beauty of the land, skies and light continue to inspire wonder, magic and personal creativity.

The star-studded night skies twinkle bright and the constellations ignite my imagination. Learning where to find star constellations and reading the stories and myths surrounding constellations are sources of inspiration. Color, value, design, pattern, all intrigues me; hours pass in creative joy! Art is meditation, creative expression, and meaningful involvement, Zen. Art is a gift given to share; to spread beauty, reflect beauty, affirm the beauty that surrounds us, sustains us and to recognize and honor the beauty within each of us. It is my hope to share inspiration, beauty, magic and love with all who look upon my work.

My work has been published in "Jim Maynard's Celestial Influences 2010 Astrological Calendar" and also by Colorado Cards & Curiosity Greeting Card Company. I have exhibited my art in galleries in New Mexico and Connecticut. In summers, I show my silk paintings and illustrations at regional art and craft fairs.

I live in a small town with many artists. Artisan supplies many of us working and creating here with quality art supplies, kindness and encouragement!

The home is filled with a superb collection of the Blumenschein family's art, a representative sampling of works by other famous Taos artists, fine European and Spanish Colonial style antiques, and the family's lifetime of personal possessions. Painting Workshop taught by Sherrie McGraw

Sherrie McGrawWed, Feb 10 — Sunday, Feb 14, 2010 9:00 am -- 4:00 pm

Once the student learns to paint, he or she can paint anything. And although complicating the discipline of painting may be a lucrative business, the great painters in history wanted simple solutions. Where the beginner sees dissimilarity, the artist sees harmony and relationships. This class will deal with the elements that make good painting good, regardless of subject matter. Good painting uses the abstract elements available in the visual language of painting (color, value, edges and paint quality) to play out parts in an abstract visual concept. Understanding why certain solutions work and why others don't is how the student can successfully learn to paint well. There will be class demonstrations and individual critiques. All levels of experience are welcome.

Class will receive 5 full days of hands-on instruction by Sherrie McGraw. McGraw is a professional oil painter and an experienced painting instructor. Learn more about your instructor at www.sherriemcgraw.com.

Building a Habitat for Creativity at Artisan's Albuquerque Store

Habitat for CreativityTuesday mornings from 10-12:30
Eight weeks, March 9th -April 27th
course fee $200.00

During this eight week class we will work with the theme of habitat and how to build a sustainable habitat for our creativity. How do we lay the foundation that will sustain our refuge? How do we maintain the structure of this habitat in chaotic times?

Each week we will discuss a chapter from the book, The Creative Habit by Twyla Tharp. A few of the chapter headings, Rituals for Preparation; Your Creative DNA; Before You Can Think out of the Box, You Have to Start with a Box; will give you an idea of what we might consider in our weekly classroom discussions.

One of our main objectives will be to nurture the imagination through exercises inspired by the readings and a field trip to one local artist's studio. Twyla Tharp is a choreographer but her practices of creative expression apply to all artists, when she walks into the large white dance studio intent on creating her next composition she is like every artist who ever faced a blank canvas. And as someone recently said to me, the larger the offering the more we must go within. I invite you to set anchor for eight weeks and consider together how we might build a habitat for creativity.
