Wow! After twenty years of making a living as
an artist, I continue to be full of wonder, awe and appreciation.
My paintings somehow keep selling, allowing me to continue with
my creativity. I respect the honor, knowing that the world is
full of talented people and collectors have so many choices.
Now I wonder, what else could I do if I could not be an artist?
I
went to The Maryland Institute, College of Art where I graduated
with a degree in painting, 1976. It was a great education—I
loved being in a close-knit art community, learning so much about
every art discipline. After I graduated, I headed west and ended
up in another art community, Santa Fe. I began painting portraits
on the plaza, but when I married and began a family, my income
could not support us. I started a landscaping business and eventually
it grew to about ten employees. But I was not entirely happy.
Eventually, my second wife helped me enough that I sold my business
to work full time as an artist. I opened a studio on Canyon Rd
where I sold my paintings. The beginning was hit or miss but
I struggled on, eventually owning two other galleries. In 1997,
my oldest daughter was diagnosed with cancer, and I sold my gallery.
She died in 1999 and I wrote a book about our journey together
in life. It is called A Heart Traced in Sand and has won several
awards. (It is sold at the Artisan, also at http://heartsand.com).
I like trying different approaches that keep me learning. I
can paint with brush and medium, but most often just use the
palette knife—it does not leave my hand. I like the immediacy.
The Artisan and Santa Fe are indelibly linked. You cannot
imagine one without the other. When people think of Santa Fe,
they also picture great art. And where do artists go to find
any art supply they can imagine? The Artisan!
